Overview
Take a guided tour of the famous Hobbiton Movie Set, located inside a picturesque 1,250 acre sheep and beef farm near Matamata. Here, the village of Hobbiton was carefully created in amazing detail as a film location for the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movie trilogies. During your guided tour of this amazing location you’ll see sights like Hobbit holes, the Mill and the Green Dragon Inn, and learn how farmland was transformed into a living, breathing piece of Middle-earth. After exploring Hobbiton, tuck into a refreshing beverage at the Green Dragon Inn.
Please note: A development project is underway at Hobbiton Movie Set until December 2023. Please visit the official Hobbiton website for detailed information on how this construction could impact your experience.
After the Hobbiton Movie Set tour is complete, you will be dropped in Rotorua where you will have an hour to relax, rest your feet and charge your camera before the Te Puia shuttle comes to collect you for the next experience.
The Te Pō Indigenous Experience at Te Puia begins with a mouth-watering buffet at the world-famous Pātaka Kai Restaurant, Bar, and Cafe. With locally sourced cuisine and an authentic Māori twist in each dish, the buffet is guaranteed to be a favourite of the night. Following this, you will be led to view an exhilarating cultural performance that takes place in the beautifully carved meeting house, Te Aronui a Rua. It will include a Pōhiri (Traditional Māori Welcome), Waiata (Song), Mōteatea (traditional chant), Poi, and Haka.
Afterward, enter the geothermal valley on the waka (electric shuttle) and discover one of New Zealand’s most magnificent geothermal wonderlands – featuring dramatic geysers, bubbling mud, and beautiful native bush. Enjoy a hot chocolate, seated on a naturally heated rock terrace overlooking the powerful Pōhutu Geyser.

Construction on the Hobbiton Movie Set: A major and very exciting development project is underway at Hobbiton Movie Set and will impact tours between April-December 2023. Tours throughout this period will follow an alternate route around the construction zone and will not be able to see Bagshot Row, including Samwise Gamgee’s home. There will also be some construction noise and machinery on Set as work is underway transforming the hillside. You can read more about the Bagshot Row Project here.
Please note: there is approximately an hour break between the coach completing hotel drop offs in Rotorua after the Hobbiton Movie Set Tour and the hotel pick ups starting for the Te Pō Evening Experience.
